Despite all efforts to reduce obesity, according to statistics from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States are considered overweight.  However, there is some good news –numerous studies have shown that people who drink tea on a regular basis lose weight much faster than those who do not. While all types of tea come from one plant (Thea sinensis), there are four major tea categories – Black, White, Green and Oolong. Each of these four types has its own individual properties, from melting lipolysis that is stored in your fat cells to diminishing your hunger hormones.

Black Tea – Breaking Down Stored Fat

Black tea is the most popular tea in the United States (according to the Tea Association of America, more than 85% of all consumed tea was Black). However if you want to shed some pounds, you need something a little bit different. Chinese black tea, also known as pu-erh, is different from black tea in America; the tea leaves are fermented by microorganisms over a period of several months. Thus, pu-erh contains flavonoids known as theabrownins and gallic acid. According to a Nutrition Research study, due to the effects of these flavonoids, this tea promotes weight loss and significantly decreases visceral fat.

White Tea – Preventing New Fat Cells from Growing

White tea is usually dried naturally in sunlight, making it the least processed and the richest source of polyphenols and antioxidants among teas. Often we see different commercials on TV, advertising “organic” teas that promote weight loss, but if you really want a diet tea – this is probably as close as it gets. According to a study from the Nutrition and Metabolism journal, white tea boosts the breakdown of fat (lipolysis) and blocks the formation of fat cells (adipogenesis).

green tea

Green Tea – Unlocking Fat Cells Before a Workout

Only one cup of green tea before a workout will charge the fat-burning effects of training. In a study from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, over a period of 12 weeks, subjects who combined a cup of green tea with a 25-minute workout every day lost on average two pounds more than their non-tea-drinking counterparts. In addition, organic tea sorts, such as Matcha Green Tea are full of catechins, a compound that dissolves adipose tissue by triggering the release of fat from fat cells and boosting the liver’s capacity for turning that fat into energy.

Oolong Tea – Boosting Your Metabolism

Oolong roughly translates to “black dragon”; this is a light, herbal type of tea, that is packed with catechins (just like green ta), which improve your body’s ability to metabolize lipids and lose fat in the process. In a study, published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine, researchers found that people who drink Oolong tea on a regular basis lose about a pound per week. Over a course of six weeks, 70% of subjects who ingested 8 g of Oolong tea a day lost more than 3 kg and exhibited a 12% decrease in fat content.

Regarding Safety Concerns

While in general most herbs used in herbal teas are regarded as safe for consumption, you should always chat with your doctor before using tea for weight loss. This is especially recommendable to mothers who are still breastfeeding, seeing how the safety of certain herbs, such as ginger and chamomile, has not been established for breastfeeding women. In addition, high amounts of certain herbs may interact with some medications, so visit your local doctor, just to be safe.
