So what’s worse than blatantly ignoring a proper skin care régime? It is trying to stick to a skin care routine and then find out that you’re effing up your skin and don’t even know it. Wondering what are the skin care mistakes that many people had no idea they were making? Well read on, you might be guilty of them too.

Waiting too long to moisturize your face

The rule of thumb is to apply a facial moisturizer within one minute of washing your face. Letting the time pass can gradually dehydrate your skin as the air sucks the moisture. In addition, to help hydrate and protect your skin, apply a moisturizer for oily skin with ceramides or topical hyaluronic acid.

Exfoliating too often

It feels good to scrub away dirt and excess oil from those pores. In fact, many people think they can freely exfoliate their faces whenever they feel like it as it keeps the face clean, fresh and radiant. However, exfoliating scrubs are abrasive and over-exfoliating can damage your skin. Generally, exfoliant must be used only once or twice a week maxes.

Not getting enough sleep

You’ll feel tired and stressed if you are not sleeping enough. Unfortunately, when the body gets stressed, it releases cortisol, which causes inflammation throughout the body including your skin. A good night’s sleep will not only revitalize your body, it will calm your skin too.

Sleeping with makeup on

We’ve been there – you’re too tired (or drunk) to wash your face and remove your make up, but don’t make falling into bed with makeup on a habit. Not washing your face and removing makeup will not only clog your pores, it will also welcome grime and dirt with open arms to stay on your face for more than eight hours! The bad news is that when your makeup becomes impacted in pores, it makes pores larger. Hitting the bed without taking your makeup off your face is a big, big mistake.

Not changing your pillow case often

The magic number is changing your pillowcase every 7 days. All the dirt and grime that stick to your face throughout the day will be all over your pillowcase when you wake up. Multiply it by seven and you’ll get a filthy pile of bacteria on your pillow.

Applying the wrong vitamins

Celebrity aesthetician Mandy Epey advised that serums containing vitamin C must be worn during the day and not at night. The reason for this is because vitamin C boosts the effectiveness of your sunscreen and intensifies the skin’s defense against UV exposure.

Squishing your face into a pillow while sleeping

Your sleeping position and how you lay your pillow at night both influence the severity of wrinkles on your face year after a year. Just imagine squishing your face into a pillow for over 2000 hours of sleep per year – that compares to ironing permanent creases, deep lines and wrinkles into your skin as collagen breaks down.

Applying retinol to damp skin

Retinol encourages skin turnover and can be effective in reversing the signs of aging. However, people with sensitive skin usually can’t handle full-on concentrations of retinol. So, thinking that keeping the skin wet or damp while applying retinol can reduce the concentration, they taught it was totally fine. However, according to Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, a Norwalk CT dermatologist, applying a topical retinoid to damp or wet skin can actually cause irritation and purging.

Taking very hot showers

We know, we know – it feels good to have a hot and steamy bath. However, taking very hot showers can damage your skin as hot water can strip away natural and healthy oils and moisture, which leaves your skin dry, tight and dehydrated.

Not wearing sunscreen daily or not applying it at all

Wearing sunscreen is a skincare essential. Unlike what many people think, the exposure to UV rays can cause premature wrinkles more compared to aging or smoking. If you think you are not getting the damaging UV rays if you are in the car or indoors, you’re wrong. That’s because 78% of harmful UV rays come from incidental exposure. If you’re sitting near the window or walking outside on cloudy day, you’re still exposed to the sun’s UV rays. That’s why it’s important to wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day.

There you have it – the top skin care blunders that are taking years off your complexion. It’s not yet too late to start taking care of your skin – the right way.
