Essential Oils: Health Benefits and How to Use Them
Just about any spice or herb you can imagine can be turned into an essential oil. This is great because there are many benefits that come with using essential oils as part of your everyday lifestyle. While essential oils are perfect for diffusing and making your home smell amazing, you can use them for a variety of health benefits such as massaging sore muscles, using them in aromatherapy to calm anxiety, or even improving your digestive system and metabolism. While it hasn’t been proven yet if essential oils can cure diseases, they’re very useful in maintaining a healthy body.
Aromatherapy
The most common use of essential oils is for aromatherapy, which means using certain scents and fragrances to create a specific mood. Aromatherapy is often used to relieve stress or to calm anxiety, but it can also be used to straighten out mood swings or to feel more energized. Lavender is a popular essential oil used to relax an overactive mind. Cardamom essential oil is another great scent for creating a sense of clarity. If you are suffering from mood swings during menstruation, clary sage essential oil is believed to help remedy a short temper. Diffusers are easy to find at any store that sells home goods, and they’re relatively cheap. Simply place a few drops of your favorite essential oil in a diffuser, and let the natural scents ease your mind.
Topical
Topical application simply means to apply something to the external part of the body. Many topical applications of essential oils are used massage sore muscles or to sooth irritated skin. If your muscles are feeling extra sore after a long day at the gym, or maybe a change in the weather has your muscles cramping up, massage peppermint essential oil into the aching areas to relax and loosen up. The cooling qualities of peppermint will unwind hot and tense muscle areas. If your skin is feeling irritated from chafing or burning, apply chamomile essential oil to the affected areas to help calm and heal the irritation. Some essential oils are stronger than others, so make sure to carefully follow any directions before directly applying essential oil to the skin.
Internal
Essential oils come from natural plant products, so most can be ingested to regulate health. Did you know that clove has antioxidant and antibacterial powers? Dilute and add a drop of clove essential oil to any meal that would taste good with that flavor. With regular use, clove essential oil can improve the immune system and maintain a healthy blood sugar level. If your stomach is aching, instead of grabbing Pepto-Bismol, add a drop of ginger essential oil to a cup of tea, and drink it to relieve your indigestion. Again, you should always follow directions carefully before consuming any essential oil.
Essential oils have a plethora of health benefits; but, remember, essential oils have not been proven to cure, prevent or treat any diseases or health problems. Always consult with a doctor before using essential oils to improve your health.
