The benefits of yoga are immense; fitness gurus and wellness professions swear by yoga. For both strength and health purposes, to your mental health – yoga has absolutely amazing benefits.

However, we can’t all make our way to classes or jump into the extreme yoga poses. There needs to be a starting ground.

The yoga that you see on magazines or Instagram isn’t an accurate reality. As people associate yoga with challenging poses, and skinny bodies, many give up before they even begin. The most important thing that you need to know about yoga is that it revolves around your breathing, and not how well you can do a fancy pose.

Below are the best yoga poses for beginners. You should aim to do them two or three times a week.

The forward fold

This is precisely how it sounds – you forward fold over your legs. Lengthen your spine towards the ground and allow your energy to exhume through your feet and hands.

Press your shoulder blades into the chest and focus on pulling your collarbones towards the floor.

Always be very mindful when practising yoga poses. Relax the neck, and never strain yourself.

Plank yoga pose

Don’t worry, this isn’t like the difficult plank pose that gym-goers swear by. It’s much more relaxing. Place your shoulders directly over the wrist and stand on the balls of your feet.

In this pose, you should focus your energy on the legs.

Never push yourself with this yoga pose. If you need to put your knees on the ground for more support, by all means, please do.

Yoga poses should be grown organically over time.

Cobra pose

You’ve probably heard of this one before – it’s surprisingly easy, even if you think your body can’t bend that way.

This pose is the best for those that sit at a desk for most of their day.

To perform this pose, lie face down on the ground, and push your upper body up off the ground with your arms. Your energy should focus on the hands and spine. Never push yourself with this – if your back begins to hurt, stop.

Upward salute

As we mentioned, yoga is predominately focused on breathing. This pose is a great time to get your body and mind ready for yoga. We recommend that you start your yoga journey with this pose.

Downward facing dog

When you think of yoga, your mind will probably jump to the downward-facing dog. Remember, yoga isn’t about making your pose look like what you see on Instagram. For instance, don’t force your heels to touch the ground at first.

Focus your energy on your fingertips, and never forget about your breathing. This pose is especially great if you go into it, from the cobra pose.

We hope this helped you with your yoga beginning. Remember, to always have fun and practice your poses safely.

Yoga should be something that you work on – over time, you’ll shock yourself with the organic progression that your body makes. Before you know it, touching your toes won’t even make you flinch.
