Struggling with weight and struggling with mood often travel together. A large meta-analysis of long-term studies shows the link runs in both directions, which matters when you set weight-loss goals.

What the research found

A 2010 systematic review and meta-analysis in Archives of General Psychiatry pooled 15 longitudinal studies with 58,745 participants. Obesity at the start of a study increased the risk of developing depression later, most strongly among people in the United States and for clinically diagnosed depression. In the other direction, depression increased the odds of developing obesity (odds ratio about 1.58). The authors concluded that there is a reciprocal link between depression and obesity.

Why this matters for weight loss

  • Low mood can make healthy habits harder, from cooking to exercise.
  • Crash diets and repeated failure can worsen how you feel, so set small, realistic goals.
  • Treating depression is part of managing weight, not a separate issue.

When to get help

If you feel low most days, have lost interest in things you used to enjoy, or your mood is affecting daily life, speak to a doctor or mental health professional. Do not wait until your weight changes. In an emergency or if you are thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or crisis line.

Frequently asked questions

Does obesity cause depression?

In the 2010 meta-analysis, obesity at baseline increased the risk of developing depression later. The link is not proof that it is the only cause.

Can depression lead to weight gain?

The same review found depression increased the odds of developing obesity (odds ratio about 1.58).

Should I treat mood before trying to lose weight?

They influence each other, so many people benefit from addressing both. A doctor can advise on the right approach for you.
