Obesity
Obesity continues to be a major health concern in many countries across the world, with childhood obesity growing at an alarming rate. A combination of factors, including unhealthy eating habits and a glaring lack of exercise, are contributing negatively to people’s health, and despite many restaurant menus and food labels now clearly stating nutritional information, the epidemic of obesity has not lessened.
Did you know that global obesity figures have doubled in the last 35 years? It is estimated that 1.9 billion adults were overweight in 2014 and more than 600 million were classified as obese, while more than 40 million children under the age of five are obese. Such worrying statistics signal a wake-up call that it is time we took action to educate not just our children, but also ourselves, on calorie intake and exercise.
This infographic from Union Quay Medical Centre examines a list of foods to avoid, while also specifying recommended portion sizes for a healthy diet. Planning healthy meals in advance, increasing our physical activity and an increase in government support are all vital actions that need to be taken in order to seriously tackle the ever-growing problem of obesity.
